For Campus Contern, taking action is our basic sustainable principle.
Find out how we were pioneers in sustainable construction in Luxembourg:
- Footprint: First BREEAM Excellent certified buildings in Luxembourg
- Savings: Smart buildings with optimised natural heat management
- Health: Innovative natural air purification
- Mobility: More than 115 charging stations for electric vehicles and multiple free soft mobility services
- Commitment: First office building to receive CO2 neutral scope 3 certification, renewed CSR certification …
“We have always had a double goal: to minimize our ecological footprint and to maximize the comfort of our tenants.” says Marc Diver, CEO “Our actions are not limited to words, but are translated into continuous improvements and concrete innovations.”
Our action is both a valuation of the property, an asset to keep our tenants and a source of constant optimization.
Since all action comes from there: why act?
Luxembourg comes second in overshoot day, shortly after Qatar! From February 17th, a very alarming podium.
Carbon Footprint in Luxembourg
Luxembourg has one of the highest carbon footprints in the world per capita. In 2020, the per capita carbon footprint was estimated at 18.7 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2eq), a slight decrease from 21.1 tonnes in 20102. However, this value remains well above the EU average.
In 2022, Luxembourg had the highest greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per capita in the EU-27, with around 14.5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per person, almost double the EU-27 average3.
>>That’s why we wanted to obtain CO2 Neutral Scope 3 certification: construction is one of the biggest contributors, we had to act.
Â
Objectives and Challenges
The country has set ambitious targets to reduce its GHG emissions, including a 55% reduction by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. However, achieving these objectives requires significant changes in lifestyles and land use planning4.
>>This is also the goal of our CSR approach in general and CO2 Neutral: to change consumption behaviour to do as well or even better with less energy or resources.
Â
Contributing sectors
The main sectors contributing to this carbon footprint are transport, the energy industry, manufacturing industries, and construction. For example, the building sector contributes around 3 tonnes of CO2 per person per year, partly due to the large surface areas of Luxembourg housing compared to other European countries4.
>>The office sector is also important with almost 5 million m2 in Luxembourg, Campus Contern and its 16,000 m2 must do its part.
Awareness and Actions
To raise awareness and encourage them to take action, the Luxembourg government has launched online tools such as myImpact.lu, which allows everyone to calculate their personal carbon footprint and compare their results to the national average. This tool aims to encourage more responsible consumption patterns56.
>> At our corporate level, we share our initiatives, best practices and certificates with our tenants: our goal is to make it easier for them to obtain their own certification and help them qualify for demanding tenders on the impact of their activities.
Â
These figures show the urgency of taking action to reduce Luxembourg’s carbon footprint. Initiatives such as those of Campus Contern, which aim to minimize the ecological footprint while maximizing occupant comfort, are crucial to achieving national sustainability goals.
We invite you to do the same, contact us if you would like information, feedback etc… We will be happy to discuss the subject.
Together, let’s build a better future! 🌳🏢
